You gotta have mojo...
Growing up in a post communist country, I was always told to never stick out. That I should look, think, and behave like everyone else. The society I grew up in rewarded this. If you know me, it should not come as a surprise that ever since I was a kid, I hated this mentality, and every time I tried to fit in, it ended up causing me a lot of pain.
I spent the last 17 years working as a designer, mostly in the tech industry, an industry that currently operates on the same principles. Most of the people use them same lingo, talk about the same thing, dress the same, behave the same, “innovate” the same way. And they hype the same things, whether it’s NFTs, crypto, blockchain, the metaverse and now with AI. There doesn’t seem to be a single original thought, opinion or idea in these people. There is no soul, no vibes, no mojo.
Early on in my life, I decided not to play this game, and to be the authentic me as much as possible. There were periods where I lost myself and tried standing in line, “be part of the gang”, but it always ended with burn out, anxiety, depression, feeling betrayed, both my the gang, but also by myself. So over and over again, I ended up choosing to be the authentic me.
And of course, throughout the years I changed as a person, I like to think that I grew, both physically - gotta start exercising my man - and emotionally, but the core, the mojo, stayed the same. I was never one of the cool kids, nor the smartest one, not the one with the cool clothes, or good looking one, just as I am not the best designer either. But every time I leave a workplace some clients follow, old clients reach out as soon as my employment status changes, because they remember me and they like working with me, because I have mojo.
As I wrote on one of my previous art pieces, Always be red Marlboro in a world full o vapes, and don’t lose your mojo.
