I moved to Sweden 10 years ago. I fell in love with the country from day one. Kanelbulle became my favorite go to pastry, Midsommar is my favorite holiday, Semla is something I didn’t know I missed in my life, falukorv, polarbröd and Billys saved my lazy ass a bunch of time when hunger suddenly kicked in, and one of my favorite thing about Christmas is of course the lussekatt. And the list of things I love goes on (as well as the list of things that most of the people here love but I sort of never vibed with them, sorry Kalles). There are brands that can be find in almost every Swedish household with millions of people who have a strong connection, thousands of memories and stories with them. And that’s fascinating. For me this is such a strong cultural DNA. You can go from Kiruna to Ystad, from Stockholm to Malmö, you will find kanelbulle everywhere and it will look and taste most likely the same, or pretty similar. You will find at least 5 restaurants having meatballs on their menu, as well as you will find all of the above mentioned items in every store in every town.
With my posters series titled “Typical Swedish?” I’m trying to celebrate this cultural DNA while putting my fun twist on it, drawing inspiration from different cultures and arts.
